How I edit Product Photography in Lightroom

I worked as a photographer and retoucher for a PNW Based Farm Girl Magazine. It was there I learned the art of product photography. Product photography can be very difficult depending on your space and your lighting equipment and conditions. Some of the most helpful tips I gathered are:

Try to use as much natural light as possible. Unless you have an assistant to hold a reflector and help you bounce light you are going to cause more shadows trying to use a flash. Use natural light from windows which is much softer.

Use a white card. Setting your white balance for the space you are shooting in is very important. This can save you so much time in the editing process. You can find good quality white cards for under $50.00 on amazon.

Always shoot in manual. If you do not know how to manually set your camera setting I would highly suggest watching some tutorials on how to use your camera. Cameras have great auto settings, but never as good as setting them yourself.

Lastly having a consistent editing workflow is very imperative to maintaining consistency within your product photography. I have created my own workflow for Lightroom to help me save time and keep my results consistent. You can view my Product Photography Lightroom Presets HERE

How I Edit Real Estate Photos in Lightroom

Real Estate Photography is a big deal. It can make or break a buyers decision on buying a home. We have been hired by many realtors by the company we work for InHouse3D for real estate photography.

First shooting with a wide angle lens is a must to showcase the space is the best possible way. Secondly, shooting in raw and setting your settings manually for each room is a must. A white card to set your white balance for each rooms lighting situations helps save time in processing as well.

We have created some time saving presets for Lightroom to help us correct issues with our real estate photography editing. These Lightroom presets help give your images a color corrected, enhanced HDR look. They can be used for indoor and outdoor. Within the pack I have segregated indoor and outdoor presets based on the different issues you can run into in each situation.

These are available on our SHOP

Astrophotography Lightroom Presets

We love Astrophotography here at Lou & Marks! I have always been a stargazer since I was a child. Laying in the grass with my sister on a lat summer night looking up at the stars and dreaming about what could be up there is how I spent many nights as a child.

Photographing the Milky Way, the Aurora, and other night skies has been a highlight in my photography adventure. Shooting these images in raw is a must!!! Also having a lens that has an F Stop that goes as low as at least 2.8 is also a must.

I created some beautiful night sky enhancing Lightroom Presets to help processing Astrophotography Shots. You can find this product on our shop.

Give Them Some Sparkle

Being who I am I love everything sparkly and gold.  That translates over to why I created our Sparkler Photoshop overlays. You can add a sparkler swirl around your wedding clients, add glam to your portraits, and spell out your clients wedding date in sparklers.

I started creating resources to speed up our workflow during our busy wedding season. They helped us so much I wanted to share what we created with other photographers.

I love the creative look this gives images. By far one of my favorite products I have created.

Getting Ready

When our clients are deciding the time line for their wedding photography we always encourage them to let us have some time photographing them getting ready.

Those are some great organic moments. Getting ready shot are some of my absolute favorite. While I am capturing images of the the bride and bridesmaids/family getting ready Alfredo is capture the groom and groomsmen/family.

Alfredo Also is able to capture detail shots of the venue before any guests arrive, and detailed ring shots.

When looking back on their wedding these moments are easily overlooked with the stress/anxiety before the ceremony. It's great for your clients to have clear memories of everything that took place.

We encourage you photographers out there to let your brides/grooms know the importance of getting these moments photographed.

Questions To Ask Your Potential Photographer

With Wedding Season gearing up and Wedding Expos around the corner, it can be overwhelming for the Bride and Groom to determine who to hire as their Wedding Photographer.

When heading to a Wedding Expo or to meet up with a potential Photographer for your wedding, it can be hard to decide who is right for your needs/budget.

Screen Shot 2020-04-28 at 2.51.36 PM.jpg

You should first determine your budget, what type of photography style you like, how many hours of coverage you are going to need, and if you are wanting any products (albums, thank you cards, canvas prints).

Once you have determined your needs it's good to get a list of questions you would like to ask your potential photographer.

1) Ask to see an entire wedding album. It's easy to showcase your best image or few images from a wedding, you want to see that they can capture an entire wedding well.

2) Ask about their years of experience, education, and gear. You want to make sure they have some experience, they are well educated in photography and the workings of their camera, and you want to make sure they have a backup camera & lens and a lighting kit. You have to expect and prepare for the unexpected. A good photographer will have backup gear incase anything malfunctions with their main gear.

Screen Shot 2020-04-28 at 2.51.32 PM.jpg

3) Ask about how the images will be processed. Does "raw" to them mean straight out of the camera or lightly processed? Also if you are receiving "retouched images" what is retouched/included in that?

4) Ask about the contract and the deposit. Read your contract thoroughly. Make sure to keep a copy for your records as well.

5) Lastly ask them about their products. What they offer, what different options they have, and the timeline for you to receive your products and digital images.

When looking to hire a potential photographer the best quality to look for other than their work is good communication. You want someone who is going to listen, ask questions and give feedback.

Black & White Or Color?

As a photographer I absolutely love black & white images. I took a film photography class in which we only used black and white film. In a black & white image I focus more on the main subject of the image. In color my eyes go everywhere, from the subject to the background to the colors.

For Weddings the majority of our clients have not wanted very many of their images in black & white. In our initial meeting I always ask them what editing styles they like, and if they prefer color or black & white.

To ensure our clients get exactly what they want, I deliver their final digital images all in color, and do an additional folder of images I call creatively edited. I go through and make some matte, some black & white, and a variation of all my creative presets.

Our wedding clients have loved this. They get their chosen images in the original color as well as a creatively edited version. Many of our clients who at first said they did not want black & white images in their albums decided to use some after seeing their images in black & white.

Wedding Day Details

Details are so important when it comes to wedding photography. The bride and groom spend so much time and money into making every little detail of the wedding cohesive. As Wedding photographers it's our job to make sure we capture all those little details for our Bride and Groom.

Some of the detail shots to include for your wedding clients are: rings, flowers, brides jewelry, grooms tie/bow tie, bride/grooms shoes, brides dress, lacing up the dress, ring box, cake before cutting, petals from flower girl, table place cards, and marriage certificates.

Don't be afraid to get creative with your shots. Your clients will love the creativity and thoughtfulness behind your images.

Lastly, don't forget to ask your clients what details are important to them to make sure you capture everything they are wanting. Communication is key with your clients.

Wedding Day First Look

We have noticed that the majority of our wedding clients have wanted to opt out of the traditional first look down the isle, and do a more private personalized Fist Look on their Wedding Day.

All of our couples from last years Wedding Season chose to do their First Look at a near by park, or outdoor area. For us as photographer we loved this! It gives our clients the chance to personalize their first look, and us the chance to capture more intimate photographs.

This allowed us to get more up close and personal shots, a variety of angles and beautiful outdoor lighting.

If you are thinking of having a First Look off site of your Wedding Venue give your photographer the location in advance, so they will be able to scope out some amazing spots for your photographs.

All these images were edited with a combination of our Golden Hour and Portrait Lightroom Presets.

The Steam Plant

Lou & Marks recently had a project shooting the Steam Plant in Spokane Washington. Working with InHouse3D to capture some high quality artistic images to showcase the space and give others a look inside this unique building.

The Steam Plant was in operation for nearly 70 years. In 1986 the boiler was shut down due to the fact that is was not economically feasible to use steam heat throughout Spokane.

In 1996 the Steam Plants plan to renovate the space came to life. The old plant is now an architecturally interesting space where local businesses call home.

If you happen to be in Spokane I suggest going downtown and checking out this unique space and take a look for yourself at all they have to offer and the sheer beauty behind the history of the Steam Plant.

Designing Clients Wedding Albums

We have had the pleasure of shooting weddings together for the past 4 years. During that time we have had the chance to try out our fair share of vendors for our clients wedding albums.

Depending on wether you are designing your own spreads or are going to use the automated layouts will determine which site is best for you.

Best site for using automated layouts: Kiss

There are different membership options, but even the free membership allows you to choose between many designs and is very user friendly. They offer modern cover options and custom engravings.

You can sign up for a membership with them HERE

And view an example of one of our Wedding Albums made with Kiss HERE

Best site for designing your own spreads: White House CC

White House offers so much customization within your album and with cover options. They offer premium lustre paper as an option as well.

You can choose to have a custom combo cover with leather binding and a photo or a more simple all leather/fabric cover.

You can apply for your free membership with WHCC HERE

They offer every product you could need for your clients, not just albums.

No matter how you decide to design/order your albums there are a lot of great options out there. I am planning on testing out Artifact Uprising next and will give a review of how our album turned out.
